7/14/06 Southern Maryland Officials Endorse O'Malley/Brown
Congressman Hoyer Cites O’Malley’s Commitment to
Fighting for Maryland’s Hardworking Families
WALDORF, MD (July 14, 2006) – Martin O’Malley and Anthony Brown joined with many Southern Maryland federal, state, and local officials, including Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, today in Charles County to accept their endorsement for Governor and Lt. Governor of the State of Maryland. At the event, local leaders from Charles County, Calvert County, and St. Mary’s County praised O’Malley and Brown for their positive vision for our state and real solutions for helping Maryland’s families and small businesses.
“I am honored to the have the support of so many in Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s County, said Martin O’Malley. “Families in Southern Maryland and throughout our state are tired of the politics of division, inaction, and failed leadership of Bob Ehrlich, and with your help, working together we are going to put the Governor’s Office back on the side of Maryland’s hardworking families, seniors, and small businesses.
Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, the House Democratic Whip and highest ranking member of Congress in Maryland history, stated, “Throughout his career in public service-as a prosecutor, as a city councilman and as mayor, Martin O’Malley has continually put people before politics. And now he has real plans to help our hardworking families – real plans for affordable health care, greater access to college and quality schools, less congestion, a clean bay and safe neighborhoods. When he is elected Governor in November, he will seek consensus rather than division in Annapolis.â€?
During the event, O’Malley and Brown focused on their commitment to fighting for Maryland’s hardworking families who are struggling to make ends meet amid $3 billion in increased taxes and fees under Bob Ehrlich, rising gasoline and energy prices, and rising healthcare costs. Earlier this week, O’Malley and Brown released detailed plans to make health care insurance and prescription drugs more affordable for Maryland families, seniors and small businesses. According to the United States Census, the number of uninsured residents in Maryland has increased sharply by more than a 160,000 from 2002 to 2005.
Charles County Senator Thomas “Macâ€? Middleton who was among those endorsing O’Malley and Brown today, stated, “Martin O’Malley and Anthony Brown are the types of leaders that will stand with Maryland families, not corporate profits, and special interests. While Bob Ehrlich took the side of insurance companies and vetoed fair share health care, Martin O’Malley and Anthony Brown took our side and fought for more affordable health care premiums.â€?
