Anthony Brown's Remarks at the "Fighting for Families" RallyAnnapolis, Maryland Thank you for joining us here today, as we officially kick off this campaign to bring leadership that works back to the state of Maryland. You know, when I’m old and gray, and my time on this earth is drawing to an end… there are days I’ll look back on as the most important in my life. I’ll remember the day I married Patricia as the most happy… I’ll remember the days that Rebecca and Jonathan joined our family as the most exciting… And I’ll remember this day, and this moment, as among my most proud. This is the day Martin and I make it official and file to be candidates in this year’s election to be your next Governor and Lt. Governor. We are gathered here today to share with you and with the people of Maryland the reason why are filing as candidates today… the reason why we running… We are here because in the last seven months of traveling and meeting the good, hard-working people of Maryland… Martin and I have seen far too many of our neighbors falling behind in a state that has so much potential and capacity for success. We are here because Maryland needs a Governor that will stand with the hard-working families of our state, instead of standing in their way. And we are here because it’s high time we put a stop to those government officials who put special interests ahead of the public interest, and corporate bottom lines ahead of the family budget. Bob Ehrlich has spent his time in office protecting those who needed his help the least…while offering nothing to those who needed his leadership the most… And now he wants another four years as your Governor… To that, I say we give him what he deserves… No More Years! Bob Ehrlich vetoed a modest minimum wage increase and acted as an obstacle to 1.2 million BGE customers who sought relief from a 72 percent increase in their monthly bills… and now he wants another four years as your Governor. To that, I say we give him what he deserves… say it with me now… No More Years! Bob Ehrlich turned Maryland’s public institutions of higher learning into a user-fee based system by putting his chief fundraiser on the Board of Regents and raising tuitions by 40 percent… putting a college education just beyond the reach of many Maryland families… and now he wants another four years as Governor. But what does he deserve? _“NO MORE YEARS�_ Bob Ehrlich has done nothing as Governor to ease the soaring costs incurred by small businesses that take responsibility and offer their employees full health benefits… and today, there are 100,000 more Marylanders without health care than when he took office… and now he wants another four years as your Governor. But what does he deserve? _“NO MORE YEARS�_ Bob Ehrlich has sided time and time again with his benefactor, George W. Bush, over the health of our natural environment. He backed Maryland out of a multi-state pact to protect the Bay and slashed funding to Program Open Space. He was even caught trying to sell off state preservation land in a secret deal with wealthy developers… and now he wants four more years as your Governor. But what does he deserve? _“NO MORE YEARS�_ During his tenure, Bob Ehrlich has never once articulated his goals for public safety, and he’s left Maryland’s local jurisdictions to battle our common enemies of drug addiction and violent crime on their own… and now he wants another four years as your Governor. But what does he deserve? _“NO MORE YEARS�_ That’s right. But enough about what Bob Ehrlich deserves. What do you, the people of Maryland, deserve from your next gubernatorial administration? We are running because we believe that our families deserve leaders that will fight to extend opportunity, expand our middle class and help our hardworking families afford the soaring costs of everything from electricity to a gallon of gas. We are running because we believe that you deserve leaders that will fight to keep college education affordable, and who understand that increased access to higher learning is a key element in moving our state forward. We are running because we believe you deserve leadership that will fight for increased access to quality health care… fight for our environment… and fight for the safety and security of our communities. The special interests have their Governor… I think we all agree that it’s time we had one of our own… And I’m proud to introduce to you the man who will truly be your next governor, Martin O’Malley. |
